Vi, som bekymrede kirkeledere og organisasjoner, uttrykker vår dype uro over den alvorlige situasjonen i Sudan. De rapporterte grusomhetene etter RSF-militsens erobring av El Fasher har forverret det som allerede er verdens mest alvorlige humanitære krise. Flere større byer står nå i betydelig fare for å lide samme skjebne. Kirkenes Verdensråd har nylig omtalt situasjonen som «en stadig dypere nedstigning i kaos og umenneskelighet». Overfor denne menneskelige katastrofen kan vi ikke tie.
Biskopene i både den anglikanske/episkopale kirke og den katolske kirke i Sudan har kommet med oppfordringer om umiddelbar handling etter sine nylige møter i henholdsvis Kampala og Malakal. Alle er dypt bekymret over den ødeleggende konflikten og den stadig forverrede situasjonen.
De anglikanske/episkopale biskopene har oppfordret til en umiddelbar stans i fiendtlighetene for å finne en vei mot fred, og har fordømt utenlandske aktører som bidrar til å nære krigen i Sudan. De ber «det internasjonale og regionale samfunn om å rette oppmerksomheten mot krigen i Sudan» og plassere den «blant sine høyeste prioriteringer for diplomatisk og humanitær innsats».
De katolske biskopene har uttrykt bekymring over «den forbløffende mangel på respekt for menneskelig verdighet» og «de enestående etniske, stamme- og intertribale splittelsene i politikkens navn».
Sammen med Kirkenes Verdensråd oppfordrer vi til at all innflytelse brukes overfor de stridende parter og eksterne aktører:
- for en umiddelbar stans i kampene og en slutt på krigen
- for at humanitær tilgang sikres og at det gis en tilstrekkelig respons på de berørte samfunns humanitære behov
- for at sivile beskyttes og at det sikres ansvarlighet for de begåtte grusomhetene
Sammen med de sudanske biskopene bekrefter vi kirkens ansvar for å arbeide for fred og står fortsatt villige til å tjene som aktive partnere i arbeidet for å oppnå en omfattende og bærekraftig fred i Sudan.

Sudan’s human catastrophe: we cannot keep silent
We write as concerned Church leaders and organisations gravely alarmed at the situation in Sudan. Reported atrocities following the capture of El Fasher by the RSF militia have compounded what was already the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. Other major towns now lie at significant risk of a similar fate. The World Council of Churches has recently called the situation «a deepening descent into chaos and inhumanity». In the face of this human catastrophe we cannot keep silent.
The bishops of both the Anglican/Episcopal Church and the Catholic Church in Sudan have both issued calls for urgent action following their recent meetings in Kampala and Malakal respectively. All are deeply disturbed at the devastating conflict and worsening situation.
The Anglican / Episcopal bishops have called for an immediate cessation of hostilities to find a way towards peace and have condemned outside countries fuelling the war in Sudan. They call for «the international community and regional community to pay attention to the war in Sudan» and to place it «among their top priorities for diplomatic and humanitarian action.»
The Catholic bishops have expressed concern at «the astonishing lack of respect for human dignity» and «the unprecedented ethnic, tribal and inter-tribal divisions in the name of politics».
Together with the World Council of Churches, we urge that all influence be used on the opposing sides and external actors:
- for an immediate cessation of fighting and an end to the war;
- for humanitarian access to be provided and an adequate response to the humanitarian needs of the affected communities;
- for civilians to be protected and for accountability for the atrocities committed.
Together with the Sudanese bishops, we reaffirm the Church’s responsibility towards making peace and remain willing to serve as active partners in seeking to achieve comprehensive and sustainable peace in Sudan.
